The P&Pd Anti-Backing Bar, (or Cattle Restraining Bar) is designed for herringbone dairy sheds, vet races, and cattle handling facilities. It provides a safer, more effective alternative to ropes, chains, and traditional backing bars.
-
Light & evenly distributed bar weight
-
Powerful jaw gripping ability (due to unique cam action jaw arrangement)
-
Grips common pipe and rail sizes
-
Quiet & smooth operation
-
Unique tether system maintains the powerful jaw grip regardless of where an animal pushes against the bar
Anti backing bar devices such as this have been around for years, each with particular virtues, but most with common shortfalls. These shortfalls have included heaviness, unpredictable holding ability, poor holding ability, noisy operation, and common to all, the inability to hold stock that turn around and put pressure on the gripping end of the device (heifers commonly).
P&Pd considered these issues and developed a bar that satisfied P&Pd’s tester/users (dairy farmers and veterinary technicians).
It was the combination of the valued critique from these testers, and a considered technical approach to development, that resulted in this cattle restraining device:
-
being lighter than equivalent quick attaching backing bars
-
having a better weight bias away from the jaw end
-
having a sensitive and powerful breast rail gripping ability (due to unique cam action jaw arrangement)
-
that has adjustment for gripping two common pipe sizes (50NB & 40NB), plus will grip the next size down (32NB), and equivalent width’s of square section (steel or wood) up to 60mm
-
that operates with little noise
-
that , when using the shock cord tether, maintains a pre-load on the bar so that the bar is locked solid no matter where force is applied to it (for use when introducing heifers to the milking shed)
-
which is constructed to distribute forces evenly through-out the structure allowing a reduction in material weights in less critical stress zones
-
being made of high quality materials and protective coatings
and as result is; effective, light and safe to use

How the Anti-Backing Bar works:
A sturdy, safe, easy to use and powerful anti-backing bar for milking sheds, vet races and stalls of up to 1400mm approx. in width... that holds solidly in place regardless of animal movement due to the incredible gripping ability of it's jaw-head and the additional shock cord tether that keeps the bar pre-tensioned (for use when introducing nervous stock to the milking shed).
-
The powerful jaw-head requires little animal pressure to solidly grip a pipe/rail.
-
The red bumpers stop sharp metallic clanks when the jaw hits concrete.
-
There are adjustment pivot holes for the two most typical pipe sizes (48mm OD & 60mm OD),
-
plus the jaw will easily grip the next pipe-size down (42mm OD ) when on the smaller pipe setting (round and square sections).
Typical configurations of tether attachment, which are easy and intuitive to apply, and mostly only employed when introducing new stock to the milking shed... this cattle restraint is very capable without this aid, for mature stock.

There's no real skill required in tethering and there are three immediate attachment points for the returning shock cord loop to attach to - the handle, the knob on the swinging bracket, and the hook.... The cord passes over the bum rail (zigzag or straight) twice with the second pass going over the first pass as the cord is made to return back to a hitch position.
As long as the steel handle hook doesn't rest on the bum rail (which is easily avoidable), in a way that impedes rearwards bar movement, then the bar is pre-tensioned and ready for action, for the likes of newly introduced heifers to the milking shed... the tether is typically only used for new, nervous stock.

Gripping ability as force is applied to the bar's jaw end, a feature that other quick attaching cattle restraining bars cannot match

"We had a cow that got stuck on bar after she jumped over it. I was away from shed when staff phoned me to say they can't get her off, she is hanging over bar. My heart sank, a brand new bar will now surely be bent and stuffed! What a waste of money! When I got to the shed after about 10 minutes she was hanging there like sack of s*** with full weight on bar. Then the BIG surprise! All we had to do was lift handle and slide it back into bar which then dropped to ground allowing the retard cow to walk off. BEST of all, NO damage to bar!!! Handle slides in and out perfectly! Now that is what I called a strong piece of equipment! Cheers."
